Oversized Baggage Policy

Please note that when a piece of baggage exceeds the total dimension of 158cm (height + length + width), a charge of USD 50 per oversized bag will be charged. However, the acceptance of such oversized baggage will be subject to the type of aircraft as well. This does not apply to sporting equipment which will be handled separately

UL Policy for all destinations

Each piece of hand baggage must weigh no more than 7 kg and measure no more than a total of 115cm (l+h+w). In Economy Class, passengers are allowed one piece of hand baggage. In Business Class, passengers are allowed 2 pieces of hand baggage.

Below indicated free carry-on items are permitted in addition to above hand luggage in all cabin classes

• One Laptop
• One lady's hand bag, purse or pocket book, Duty Free Item
• One overcoat, wrap or blanket
• One umbrella or walking stick
• One small camera and/or one pair of binoculars

Note: The permitted Duty free item shall not be large in size and be able to stow in the aircraft overhead bin. Station staff to control excessive Cabin baggage carried by passengers.

For passengers travelling with infants

• One Cabin Bag 56cm x 36cm x 23cm (115cm) weight of 5 kgs for passengers travelling with Infants containing Infant's food for consumption in flight together with Infant's toiletries and disposable items such as nappies.
• One infant's carrying basket or fully collapsible stroller/pushchair (Can be carried only if space available in Cabin. If not, as checked baggage)

Hand baggage cannot be accepted if it:

• Is unsuitable for air carriage due to its weight, size or nature.
• Cannot fit under the seat or be stowed in the overhead compartment.
• Is unsuitably packed.

Following the cabin baggage limitations is extremely important for your safety as it minimizes the risk of injury to passengers and crew. Any overweight cabin bag shall be retrieved at the boarding gate and subjected to an excess baggage fee.

While your flight may have been booked through SriLankan Airlines, it may be operated by one of our whom we have partnered with.

This is applicable if your journey involves multiple destinations and airline partners.

Any baggage carried by all types of passengers which is over and above the allowed free baggage allowance can be carried by paying an additional charge.

You would need to pay per kilogram of weight that exceeds your free baggage allowance.

A fixed rate is charged when travelling to/from these destinations at the airport where you perform your check-in for SriLankan Airlines.

If checking into a codeshare or an interline partner, the charges may vary.

Below rates published in USD will be converted to applicable local currency at the time of check-in.

Further to below, promotional excess baggage rates shall apply at stations. You may contact the local SriLankan Airlines office for details.

Piece concept

Routings originating/destined to/from North, Central and South America

You would need to pay for each piece/weight that exceeds your free baggage allowance.

*Overweight charge - Increase the weight of your bag from 23Kg to 32Kg. The rates shall apply per bag.

The dimensions of the extra piece would comply with the normal baggage requirements. For more information, please refer to Checked baggage allowance.

Mobility Aids

Passengers who need assistance from their mobility aids will be allowed to carry them free of charge over and above the checked and hand luggage allowance irrespective of their cabin class. (Conditions apply).

Large or heavy items (e.g. wheel chairs) may need to be carried as checked baggage. Please advise your requirements at the time of booking in order to ensure special handling arrangements at airport/s.

Electronic Equipment

The mobile phones are permitted to use on SriLankan Airlines flights on aircraft mode (Flight Mode) and on aircraft with satellite communication facilities.

On both occasions the use shall be restricted during the critical phases of the flight as they can interfere with the aircraft's navigational equipment.

• Devices that are not restricted - Medically prescribed Instruments/Hearing Aids/ Pacemakers/Cameras and Calculators.
• Devices permitted during cruise -Personal Computers/Electronic Games and Compact Disc Players.
• Devices Restricted - Televisions/Radios/Remote Control Toys/Lap-Tops with remote control mouse etc…

To ensure the safety of SriLankan airlines passengers and employees, carriage of “Small Vehicles” powered with Lithium batteries ( Air wheels, Solo wheels, Hover boards, Mini segways, Balance wheels) carried by Passengers under Checked and /or Cabin Baggage on SriLankan Airlines are totally prohibited as they are considered as “Dangerous Goods” which can lead to severe safety issues.

Bulky Baggage/Musical instruments in Passenger Seats

We accept Bulky Baggage (Musical Instruments, Diplomatic Mail, etc..) on passenger seats. A maximum weight of 75 kg is permitted to be carried on a passenger seat as “Seat Baggage”.

Please note Bulky Baggage does not entitle for any additional free baggage allowances in addition to the allowed 75kgs.

Pets

Domestic animals such as cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, and ornamental fish can be accepted for carriage as checked baggage. Animals of an unusual size or nature such as monkeys, snakes etc... cannot be carried as checked baggage. They shall only be processed through SriLankan Cargo. Restrictions/ Conditions apply.

Some SriLankan Airlines aircraft do not have the facility of carrying pets in the aircraft cargo hold due to heating conditions. Hence please intimate your Ticketing Agent of the pets carriage as space need to be protected in the aircraft hold and to request to arrange an aircraft which has the facility of carrying pets. There may be situations that we may not be able to honour your pet’s request due non-availability of an aircraft with heating facility on the day that you intend travel.

Pets carried as checked baggage shall be charged at the normal excess baggage rate for the pet and the container (cage) along with any food items irrespective of the Free Baggage Allowance.

Health Requirements

The passenger is fully responsible to comply with customs and other government requirements of all destination and transit points. Valid vaccination certificates, import/export/transit permits etc… must be presented at the time of reservation and at airport/s.

Liability

Passengers having onward connections should get confirmation from the onward airline(s) that the pet will be accommodated for beyond travel. SriLankan Airlines only holds responsibility in carrying the pet on SriLankan Airlines operated sector(s).

Acceptance of pets for carriage is subject to the passenger accepting full responsibility for the animal. SriLankan Airlines shall not be liable for injury, loss, delay, sickness or death of the animal/bird and in the event it is refused entry into transit points and/or the destination. Please check with your Ticketing agent as conditions apply.

Service Animals (Seeing Eye/Hearing Dogs)

Service Animals (Seeing Eye/Hearing Dogs) can only accompany passengers whose vision or hearing is impaired and s/he is actually dependent on the dog.

Any disabled passenger who is actually dependent on such a dog, traveling on a continuous journey in the same aircraft or with a single flight number that begins or ends at a U.S. airport is entitled to travel with a Guide/Assistant dog

Such a dog is permitted in the Business and Economy Class cabins at no extra charge. However, IATA Live Animal regulations shall apply for the carriage of the service animal.

Prior to travel

Notify SriLankan Airlines at least 48 hours before departure, Check-in for the flight at least 3 hours prior to departure, Passenger must be prepared to provide credible verbal assurance that the animal is providing a service to assist with a disability.
The passenger must ensure that the accompanying animal will not need to relieve itself during the flight or that the passenger can adequately manage the dog’s waste without creating any health and sanitation issue on the flight. He/she must bring whatever absorbent or other material required for this purpose.
The passenger must ensure that the animal is prepared for the flight by exercising the dog and limiting its fluid intake before the flight.

Note: 1

The Service Animal, however, cannot be seated where it may obstruct aisle or emergency exit areas or affect the leg space of the passenger seated adjoining. If the Service Animal cannot be accommodated at the seat location along with passenger, due to the Service Animal being disruptive or too large to fit under the seat or at the passenger's feet without encroaching on another passenger's space or protruding into the aisle, it will need to travel in a kennel (provided by the passenger) in the aircraft cargo hold free of charge. The kennel must meet IATA kennel and size requirements for the animal to ensure temperature restrictions are met for the safety of the Service Animal. Only one Service Animal is permitted to book and travel on a SriLankan flight. Always check with the Ticketing Agent.

With respect to travel on a continuous journey in the same aircraft or with a single flight number that begins or ends at a U.S. airport, the passenger has the opportunity to move with the animal to another seat location, if present on the aircraft, where the animal can be accommodated.

Note: 2

Since SriLankan Airlines has a limitation in certain aircraft cargo holds in accommodating Live Animals due to heating conditions, in order to avoid disappointment, it is extremely important that the Service Animal is booked within the given stipulated timelines in case the Service Animal needs to be loaded into the aircraft cargo hold.

SriLankan Airlines will not be responsible for the health and wellbeing of the Service Animal while it is accompanying the passenger in the cabin. The owner must assume all risks of injury, sickness and/or death to the dog before, during and after the flight.

Conditions of Acceptance

When your service animal is accompanying you in the cabin, please make sure that you adhere to the following guidelines to avoid any inconvenience.

• The dog must be properly muzzled and harnessed. It must be well behaved, inoffensive, clean and odourless and the leash of the dog must be secured to the owner’s seatbelt at all times during flight.
• It is not allowed to move in the cabin and is expected to be seated near the passenger.
• Absorbent material should be placed under the dog in order to prevent soiling of the aircraft floor.

Your safety and the safe travelling of all your belongings is our topmost priority. In order to ensure hassle free baggage delivery, please read the following instructions carefully.

General guidelines

• Certain items, because of their weight, size or nature are only accepted with the consent of the operator.
• For security reasons, many countries restrict the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels in hand baggage.
• Items refused by security screening must be hold-checked as per the operator's policy.

The passenger should not include in their cabin or checked baggage :

• Articles which do not constitute baggage as defined by SriLankan airlines.
• Articles which are likely to endanger the aircraft or persons or property on board the aircraft.
• Articles, the carriage of which is prohibited by applicable laws, regulations or orders of any state to be flown from, to or over.
• Articles which, in the opinion of the Carrier, are unsuitable for carriage by reason of their weight, size or character such as sharp items/objects and/or any irregular metal objects which are not properly packed over 5 kg of weight.
• Live animals except dogs, cats, household birds and other pets will be accepted for carriage subject to SriLankan airlines regulations.
• Firearms and ammunition other than for hunting and sporting purposes.
• Carriage of “Small Vehicles” powered with Lithium batteries carried by Passengers under Checked and /or Cabin Baggage on SriLankan Airlines are totally prohibited as they are considered as “Dangerous Goods” which can lead to severe safety issues.
• Fragile or perishable items, money, jewellery, precious metals, silverware, negotiable papers, securities or other valuables, business documents, passports and other identification documents or samples.

Other rules governing treatment of baggage at stopover points,

• Passengers holding two separate documents (tickets) for their onward journey, the baggage can be interlined (tagged to the final destination) from all airports where SriLlankan Airlines flies, excluding
  • Indian destinations excluding New Delhi.
  • Domestic interline transfer
  • Connecting budget carriers
  • Airlines with which SriLankan Airlines does not have interline agreements

Baggage shall not be interlined to Domestic points within the same country.
