6/5/2014
Marking a crucial juncture in SriLankan Environment unit’s mission to create a greener world, the team released the Environmental Policies of SriLankan Airlines at a special function that was held on World Environment Day 2014. The event unravelled with the participation of distinguished guests of SriLankan Green Team and officials from Biodiversity Sri Lanka.
The new Environment Policies invite the nature lovers to join hands together on a mission to create a greener world. The Environment Policies of SriLankan Airlines are segmented into three major categories. The three segments include Corporate Eco Procurement Policy, Corporate Environmental Policy and Corporate Energy Policy. Under each segment, the Environment unit has listed down a comprehensive set of norms and rules that SriLankan would follow in its attempts to bring back the world its natural charm. Though the Corporate Environment Policy has been in the existence since 2009, the policy was officially publicized and introduced to the staff of SriLankan at this Day.
Also on the day Environment unit unveiled the Corporate Environment website and Green Team intends to create awareness and spur people into joining their projects through website. The website has comprehensive details on the projects that the Environment unit is currently working on, their completed projects and the initiatives taken by the team to fulfil their pledge of becoming a planet friendly airline.
This year also Environment unit organized an art competition for the employee’s children and the winners of the art competition were also crowned during the World Environment Day event. Students from Minuwangoda Nalanda Boys’ Central College and Minuwangoda Nalanda Girls’ Central College were invited to the event and taken on a special tour around the SriLankan premises. After the tour, Professor Devaka Weerakoon from the University of Colombo shared his wisdom with the students on environment conservation and made an enlightening speech on how they should work towards creating a greener world. His speech revolved around the World Environment Day theme, ‘Raise your voice, not the sea level’, and explored the significance of climate change and its impact on Sri Lanka as a developing country.
