Waste management awareness programme for all staff

Solid Waste management has become one of the major environmental hazard and an issue that Sri Lanka face at present. Dumping garbage on road sides and sensitive areas such as wetlands, marshy lands, reservation etc. is a common practice adopted by the public in all areas. Further, it is disappoint to see some of the local authorities are also have adopt this malpractices and started dumping waste in nature reserves which made headlines in newspapers recently.
Considering all of these factors, ‘Waste management and current practices’, a timely training was organised by SriLankan Environment unit for the airline staff on 16th January 2018. This training was focussed on providing the staff with required knowledge on various topics related to waste management including;
- Basic understanding on ‘Waste & Waste Management’
- Health and environmental Issues related unsafe waste disposal
- Brief on SL legislations and regulations related to Waste disposal and its management
- Understanding on current practices and safe disposal methods
The training was conducted by the Mr. Nimal Premathilaka who work as the sociologist in Metro Colombo solid waste management project under the Ministry of Megapolis and western Development. He has nearly 30 year of experience in many disciplines related to waste management. Mr. Premathilaka was the Director of Waste Management Training Centre in Balangoda since 2001 and also he has been part of many national waste management programmes.
The programme was interactively conducted by Mr. Premathilaka which was well received by the staff members considering the enthusiasm of its participants. SriLankan Environment unit plans to conduct similar awareness sessions on different topics in the future for the airline staff to make them aware of current environmental affairs.
