Environment Day - 2018

6/5/2018

SriLankan Environment Unit celebrated the World Environment Day 2018 with a company-wide competition titled ‘Green Challenge 2018’ which invited the conservation minded SriLankan employees to propose innovative projects which could be adopted to reduce polythene and plastic usage within the Airline. The competition was intense and challenging, as the number of innovative proposals that were received, three projects were shortlisted by an elite panel of judges. The judges were comprising of leading environmental consultants in Sri Lanka and all of these projects were assessed based on their Applicability, Effectiveness, Environmental Impact and Financial Impact.

Cargo Operations Division was crowned as the overall winner of the competition in recognition of their innovative proposal which suggested the elimination of shrink wraps from the cargo scanning process.

The polythene and plastic free office concept which was proposed by SriLankan Aviation College was also recognised and identified as a promising concept by the judges. SLAC aims to achieve this by removing plastic drinking water bottles, encouraging employees to use lunch boxes and repurposing lunch sheets to develop eco-bricks.

The Inflight Division was also recognised for its proposal for repurposing grocery bags and substitute it with the garbage collection bag which used at the cockpit, on-board.

Cargo Operations Division who won the overall competition was given a special trophy in recognition of their achievement at the event which was held at SriLankan Aviation College. Certificates of Recognition were also given to SLAC and Inflight Division for their commendable efforts. Also it is to be highlighted that the special trophy which was given to the winner of SriLankan ‘Green Challenge 2018’ was made out of upcycled materials by our own talent, Mr. Rajarathna from Utility Services. His tireless efforts were also recognized at the event.

SriLankan School Green Club members, the young students from Andiambalama Maha Vidyalaya were also present at this event. Young members were invited to be a part of the event as the airline focussed on inspiring the next generation towards preserving and protecting the environment. They were given a special lecture on measures that can be taken to preserve the environment by reducing the consumption of polythene and plastic by Ms. N M Lakmini Radhika, Senior Environmental Officer, Central Environment Authority.

The Environment Unit hopes that the nature loving community of SriLankan will be inspired by the exemplary efforts of these divisions and continue to extend their assistance to turn SriLankan into a planet friendly airline.
