A Solar Bike project by SriLankan Staff
10/21/2015
Being the environment conscious and responsible members of SriLankan family, creative minds of the Electrical Team of Properties and Facilities Division invested their talents and expertise to invent a solar powered motor bike for SriLankan Airlines. An upcoming renewable energy source, solar energy is used to charge a recycled battery which intern utilized to power a motor bike. This is the first ever similar invention in Sri Lanka which incorporated renewable and recycling concepts contributes to zero carbon emission. The Motor Bike which is currently being used for internal travel purposes has the capacity to run a total of 60km to 70km from a single charge from its solar powered rechargeable batteries. Their efforts standout as a prime example on how recyclable resources can be used to save energy, thereby reducing operational costs.
The project stands out as an even greater feat as it was funded entirely by the electrical team. The project was completed with a total cost of LKR 60,000. The team found an unserviceable electric bike which they modified with expertise to function with regenerated batteries and these batteries can easily be recharged through a solar charging station built also by the same team. The project was initiated and guided by Rasika Gamage, Facilities Manager (Electrical & Mechanical) and was executed by the electrical team of Properties and Facilities Department.
