SriLankan Airlines Joins Hands with House of Lonali
2/28/2022
SriLankan Airlines recently signed on House of Lonali as the official designer and supplier for the airline’s signature upcycle project, ‘Mathaka.’ House of Lonali is a Sri Lankan organization that designs, and manufactures upcycled lifestyle products and they will help create a variety of unique products for SriLankan using the airline’s scrap material that would have otherwise ended up in landfill.
This partnership would pave the way to launch an exclusive range of products under the ‘Mathaka’ brand including travel bags, wallets, books, key tags, and jewellery that are distinctive in make and style. The items, made entirely from disposed airline uniforms, aircraft interior components and other material, will eventually be introduced for sale onboard SriLankan Airlines’ flights and through the website and retail partners of House of Lonali. The project allows the airline to transform its unrecyclable waste into new products, thereby reduce landfill waste and environmental pollution. Additionally, SriLankan will be indirectly empowering women by partnering with House of Lonali for the project as it is a social entrepreneurial venture that also focuses on providing employment opportunities to women.
This novel project is one of several initiatives taken by the airline towards supporting environmental sustainability in measured and impactful ways. Collaboration with like-minded partners and being part of the solution is the only way to fight against climate change. As a pioneer in the region for aviation sustainability, SriLankan Airlines continuously strives to create an eco-friendly attitude among its people. The airline is hopeful that small steps will lead to greater achievement in terms of sustainability in the long run.
SriLankan Airlines, as a responsible corporate entity, which established its environmental initiatives from 2009 with a ‘Planet Friendly SriLankan’ moto, has always been praised by IATA as one of the most conservation-conscious airlines in the region. Embedding the best practices into its daily operations and aligning its green ethos with policies, the Airline focuses on Green House Gas (GHG) emission mitigation & facing climate challengers by achieving NETZERO2050 targets, support UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and United for Wildlife initiative.
